Kindergarteners tell how to make a pumpkin pie; First Graders tell how to cook a turkey

Dianna Nicolai
Evan's Publishing Writer

LeRoy-Ostrander Kindergarteners were asked, "How do you make a pumpkin pie?" Here are their responses:

Kaydee Bergeson - Buy a can of pumpkin, get a pan, put the pumpkin in the pan and cook it in the oven.

Melanie McElroy - Take the stem out, squash it a little, make a circle, put it in the pot and in the oven. Cook the seeds in the pie. It makes them better.

Nadiya Evans - We don't make pumpkin pie. Mom makes apple pie and blueberry. Nobody in our family makes pumpkin.

Kelly Hanson - Put the seeds in the pan, cook it, take it out of the oven, cut it and eat it.

Mariana Orta - Mom knows how to do it and I help her. She tells me what to put in. Take a can of pumpkin, put the seeds in the pan and make pumpkin pie with one cup sugar, three cups milk then add another glass of milk to the pie. Cook it five minutes, then get it out and cut it.

Matthew Peters - I have no idea, but I like pumpkin pie.

Jeremiah Weiss - I don't know. Mom doesn't make it. She makes store pie.

George Bird - Mom has never made pumpkin pie. She doesn't know how.

Hope Nightingale - Mom makes good pumpkin pie, but I never watch her. She uses a cookbook and real pumpkin.

Booker Wilder - You get dough, flour and pumpkin. We get our pumpkin at the "Punkin Patch". Then you mix it up and cook it in the oven 10 minutes.

Makayla Nightingale - We just go to the store and get cans of pumpkin.

Carlie Nagel-Hardy - You cook pumpkin and sugar for 60 minutes.

Brody Larson - We don't make no pie. I just play games.

Christian Jacobsen - Grandma makes the pies. She mixes sugar with the pumpkin and cooks the seeds for two minutes.

Lucas Winfield - Buy some pumpkin in the can - real pumpkin, buy some apples, mix apple and pumpkin pie. Pick some blueberries; squish them with a fork in a pan. Cook it in the oven. Take and wash the blueberries and put them in.

Aidan Fieldgrove - Have some pumpkin, cook it.

Andrew Lohuis - Don't know. I never watched. I think you need some water and apples.

Nicole Hanson - First, put pie on a plate, then put soil in it, mix it up, put it in the oven for 15 minutes. Take it out of the oven and eat it.

Jordan Oxley - First, get a pan. Put chocolate on the bottom, frosting on the top. Put it in the oven for three minutes. Take it out and don't touch it because it's hot. Let it cool down, then you eat it.

Katelyn Holmen - We make muffin pies. You stir milk, water and eggs, put it in the oven and cook it. Then take it out and, yum, eat it -mmmm [Editors note: She said this as she rubbed her tummy].

Grant Kennedy - Make a crust, put a pan under it, then put stuff on it and bake it. Then it's all done.

Kenric Sulaski - Mom never makes it, not Grandma either. I've never had pumpkin pie. I don't know what it tastes like.

LeRoy-Ostrander First Graders were asked, "How do you cook at turkey?" Here are their responses:

Logan Foster - We don't cook turkeys. We don't know how.

Riley Olson - Dad gets one from the forest, a big, fat one. Mom puts salt and pepper on it, takes off the feathers, takes the blood out and cooks it.

Nicole Freerksen - You take the feathers off, unskin it, put it in the oven and eat it.

Nevada Hensley - Put some papa sauce on it. [Editor's note: When I asked what this was, she told me you mix A-1 and Heinz 57 together.] Cook it in the thing that spins around for 50 or 30 minutes, then when it gets all done we eat it up.

Emily Hofner - I don't watch Mom cook one, but I like to eat it. We get our turkey from the store.

Dylan Holmen - Chop it up, pull the feathers off and throw the feathers in the garbage. Cut the legs off. Get the bones out. Pull the beak off. Cut the gobbler off. [Editors note: Asked where the gobbler is, he told me it is that red thing that hangs down on the turkey's neck.] Throw the bones in the garbage. Cook it and when it's done, you eat it.

Kaleb Janssen - My mom usually takes out the ice and then she puts it in the oven, but first you have to take the plastic off. Then put the big thing in the oven. Take a knife and chomp it up in little pieces.

Carter Johnson - Fry it. Cut it open and take everything that's bad out.

Tanner Kasel - Mom takes out the juice, bakes it for half of an hour, then we eat it.

Kaelea Lewis - Take off the feathers, take off the head, put it in the stove for 40 minutes, take it out and let it cool off.

Logen Meyer - Bake it. Eat. [Editors note: A man of few words.]

Tiana Plagman - Get the turkey from the store. Mom or Dad cooks it. I help make supper and everything.

Emma Retterath - Put it in the oven and cook it for six minutes. Cut it.

Hunter Tangen - Put oil and juice and a little water in. Cut it open. Put mustard on top and put it in the oven.

Carter Turbenson - I don't know how to cook turkey, but I would put it in a pan 30 seconds. I don't like to eat turkey.

Makayla Weiss - Grandpa Gene kills a turkey. He brings it to my house to cook it. I love turkey.
